Beginner — Day 5 — Where Are You From?
A new student joins the class. His name is Somsak.
Anna: 'Hello! Where are you from?'
Somsak: 'I am from Chiang Mai. I am Thai. And you, Anna, where are you from?'
Anna: 'I'm from London. I'm British.'
Somsak: 'And Nok, are you from Bangkok?'
Nok: 'Yes, I'm from Bangkok. I'm Thai too.'
Somsak: 'Anna, is this your first time in Thailand?'
Anna: 'No, it isn't. I lived in Japan before. I am from England, but now my home is here.'
To ask where someone is from, say 'Where are you from?' The answer uses 'from' + country name ('I'm from Thailand') or a nationality word ('I'm Thai'). Countries and nationalities are often similar words — Thailand/Thai, Japan/Japanese, England/British.
