Intermediate — Day 4 — Second Conditional
Over dinner, the friends play a game: 'What would you do if...?'
Somsak: 'If I won the lottery, I would buy a house near the beach. What about you, Nok?'
Nok: 'If I had a million baht, I would start my own bakery. I've always dreamed of that.'
Anna: 'If I could speak perfect Thai, I would read Thai novels every night! What would you do if you didn't work in construction, Somsak?'
Somsak: 'If I didn't work in construction, I think I would be a chef. I love cooking.'
Nok: 'Really? If you opened a restaurant, I would definitely visit every week!'
Anna laughs. 'This is a perfect example of the second conditional — If + past simple, would + verb. We use it to imagine hypothetical or unlikely situations in the present or future. It's not about real plans; it's about imagination.' Somsak nods. 'So even though I'm not going to win the lottery, I can still say what I would do?' 'Exactly,' says Anna. 'The past simple form doesn't mean past time here — it signals that the situation is imaginary.'
