Phonics — Introduction — Letters and Sounds — How Phonics Works

Every letter has a NAME and a SOUND. The letter S has a name — we say 'ess'. But when we read a word, S makes a sound: /s/, like a snake hissing. This is the secret of phonics: the sound is what helps you read new words, not the name.

In this course you will learn the sounds behind English letters, starting with easy ones like /s/, /t/, /p/, and put them together to read real words — 's-a-t' becomes 'sat'. You will also learn special sounds that don't exist in Thai, like 'th' and 'v', with clear step-by-step practice for each one.

Why does this matter? English spelling is tricky — the same letters can make different sounds in different words. But most words DO follow patterns, and once you know the patterns, you can read thousands of words you've never seen before. That's the goal of these 20 days. Ready? Let's start listening for sounds, not just letter names.

Today's Grammar

Letter NAME vs letter SOUND — the foundation of phonics.

S — name: 'ess', sound: /s/ (like a hissing snake)
S — ชื่อ: 'เอส', เสียง: /s/ (เหมือนเสียงงูฟ่อ)
T — name: 'tee', sound: /t/ (a light tap of the tongue)
T — ชื่อ: 'ที', เสียง: /t/ (ลิ้นแตะเบา ๆ)
A — name: 'ay', short sound: /æ/ (mouth open wide, like 'a' in 'cat')
A — ชื่อ: 'เอ', เสียงสั้น: /æ/ (อ้าปากกว้าง เหมือนใน 'cat')
Sounding out: c-a-t → cat
การสะกดเสียง: c-a-t → cat (แมว)
