Phonics — Day 2 — Short Vowels: a and i

Yesterday you blended words using /æ/ (short 'a'). Today you'll name that sound properly and add a second short vowel: /ɪ/ (short 'i').

/æ/ — mouth open wide, like in: cat, hat, sat, man, nap
/ɪ/ — small smile, short and quick, like in: sit, pin, tin, tip

Compare: 'pan' (short a) vs 'pin' (short i) — same consonants, different vowel, different word! This is why vowels matter so much in English — they change the whole word.

Practice reading: 'Tim sat. Tim has a pin. Tim can tap the tin.'

Today's Grammar

Short vowels /æ/ (a) and /ɪ/ (i) — changing the vowel changes the whole word.
