Phonics — Day 4 — Consonants b, d, f, h, k, l, r — Focus: L vs R

New consonants today: /b/, /d/, /f/, /h/, /k/, /l/, /r/. Most are straightforward — but /l/ and /r/ need special attention, because Thai speakers often mix them up (Thai has both sounds, but not always in the same word positions English uses).

How to make /l/: touch the tip of your tongue to the bumpy ridge right behind your top front teeth, and let air flow around the sides of your tongue. Say: la-la-la.

How to make /r/: curl the tip of your tongue UP and BACK, without touching the roof of your mouth at all. Say: ra-ra-ra.

The biggest difference: for /l/, your tongue TOUCHES; for /r/, your tongue does NOT touch anything. Practice these pairs slowly:
light / right
load / road
glass / grass
fly / fry

Don't worry if it feels strange — this is a new muscle movement, and it gets easier with practice.
