Intermediate — Day 3 — Used to / Would
On a rainy evening, Anna tells stories about her hometown in England.
Anna: 'When I was young, I used to live in a small village. Every Sunday, my family would walk to the bakery and buy fresh bread.'
Nok: 'That sounds lovely! Did you use to have snow there?'
Anna: 'Yes, we used to get a lot of snow in winter. We would build snowmen and drink hot chocolate afterward. I didn't use to like the cold, though — I always wanted summer to come faster.'
Somsak: 'It's so different from Thailand. We didn't use to have four seasons like that.'
Anna: 'Exactly. Tell me — did life use to be different for you when you were a child?'
Nok: 'Definitely. My grandmother used to cook every meal from scratch. We would all sit together at the table, no phones allowed!'
Anna smiles. 'That's a great example of used to and would for past habits. Used to works for both habits (I used to live there) and states (I used to like...). Would only works for repeated actions, not states — we can't say I would like the cold, only I used to like it.'
